About Canon Collins Masters Scholarship Program

Canon Collins Trust invites applications for scholarships to support taught Master’s degrees at 2 UK universities. They accept applications through their online form between Wednesday 16 January 2019 and Monday 25 February 2019.

Eligibility Requirements for the Canon Collins Fully Funded Scholarship

We invite applications for scholarships to support taught Master’s degree programmes at the
universities listed below.

Applicants for any of these awards must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in, one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field.

In addition, there are subject restrictions at certain universities. Please read the eligibility criteria below
carefully and only apply if you are eligible.

  1. School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS)
    We partner with SOAS to co-fund one or two scholarships annually. Applicants can apply for any fulltime one-year taught master’s course at this university.
  2. University of Sussex
    We partner with the Mandela Scholarship Fund at the University of Sussex to fund three awards
    annually. Applicants can apply for any full-time one-year taught master’s course at this university.
    Canon Collins Trust scholarship do not provide scholarships for study at any other UK universities.

Value / Worth of the Scholarship award

All these scholarships include:

  • tuition fees,
  • a return flight to the UK, and a
  • maintenance allowance. We do not provide for any dependents.

CCUK (Canon Collins) 2019 – 2020 Scholarship Guidelines

How to apply
The online application form is of primary importance as it serves as the basis for assessment. The online application form can be found on the Canon Collins Trust website, when the call for applications is open. You will find full instructions online when you start a new form.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete and accurate before submitting your
application online.

All sections of the form need to be complete before the system will allow the application form to be
submitted. Information can be saved and the application form edited until the applicant chooses to
submit.

Required Documents

All applicants are required to submit the following supporting documentation:

  • Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate, if available
  • Certified academic transcripts
  • Reference letters from two referees
  • ID document (The following are acceptable: Passport, Birth Certificate, Driver’s License)
  • Proof of refugee status, if applicable.
  • Ideally, you should submit an academic reference (preferably from your current supervisor) and a
    reference from an employer.
  • You should ask your referees to write a reference that relates to your application for this scholarship.
    It should outline your strengths as an applicant, demonstrate your capacity to study at the level
    required, explain how you would benefit from further study and identify your potential impact in the
    future.

Getting a place on your course

You must apply separately to the university of your choice. Scholarships will only be awarded upon
confirmation that applicants have been offered a place at one of the above universities.( School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) and University of Sussex If you are
offered a scholarship but fail to get a place on a course, we will withdraw the offer.

At the time of applying for a scholarship applicants are expected to be in the process of applying for admission to the university of their choice.

Selection Criteria for Canon Collins Trust Scholarship 2019

In selecting scholars, the Trust will apply a number of criteria including academic merit, need and the potential to contribute to southern Africa’s future prosperity. We are looking for future leaders in their fields and therefore demonstrable leadership qualities are important. The past achievements of the applicant, present commitment to further study, as well as their future plans, will be assessed in relation to how that will contribute to the development of southern Africa.

Applicants for the UK Scholarship programme will be assessed on the basis of the information that they supply on their application form against the criteria outlined below:

1.Academic Record and References
Applicants should have a minimum of a good second-class (2.1) undergraduate degree and excellent
references. Applicants with a first class degree will have a distinct advantage.

2. Future Impact
All applicants need to articulate how they intend to put their scholarship into action and how the course
will enable them to make an enhanced contribution to their community or country.

3. Work Experience
We favour applications where there is a demonstrable continuity between an applicant’s work
experience, past study and their proposed course of study.

4. Leadership Competencies & Personal Qualities
Applicants will be asked to demonstrate how they have developed their leadership skills in the
workplace, academia or in their personal life. Priority will be given to those who can describe occasions in which they have used their skills to build strategic relationships and networks, support peers and mentor others, and/or deliver results that have led to innovation and change.

5. Commitment to Country/Community
We will favour applicants who most clearly show a desire to be part of and to contribute to the future
prosperity of southern Africa.

6. Application form
The application form matters. Applicants should:
 Demonstrate a good command of English
 Answer all of the questions properly and completely
 Complete the application and deliver all supporting documents by the deadline

Timeline for Application

The scholarship will open for applications on Wednesday 16 January 2019 and the deadline for applications is 17:00 on Monday 25 February 2019. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

We will let all applicants know the outcome of their application by June 2019. Please do not email us to ask about the outcome of your application. All notifications will be by email so please make sure you provide an accurate email address.
